Common questions

Where does the forecast come from?
From the national weather service for where you are: the Met Office in the UK and Ireland, Deutscher Wetterdienst in Germany, the US National Weather Service in the US, and MET Norway, the Norwegian Meteorological Institute, everywhere else. You can choose another in Settings. It comes through our own server, which caches forecasts so the app opens quickly. Always Weather is independent and isn’t affiliated with any weather service or government.

Why does it ask for precise location?
So the forecast is for where you actually are: approximate location can be a few kilometres out, enough to miss a shower’s edge or the coast. The app still rounds your position to about a kilometre before it leaves your device, and it works with approximate location too: choose it when your phone asks. Location is optional: without it, search for a place instead.

How do I move through the hours?
Drag along the bars at the bottom of the screen (in Paper, along the chart). With TalkBack or VoiceOver on, swipe up or down on the hours control.

Can I change how it looks?
Yes. Settings → Look switches between Sky and Paper at any time. The forecast is the same.

The forecast says “Updated” with an old time.
The app shows the last forecast straight away, even without a signal, then refreshes. If it can’t refresh for a day, it says the forecast may be out of date and offers to try again.

How do I turn off crash reports?
Settings → Crash reports. Reports are anonymous; see the privacy policy.

I bought it on another phone.
Purchases belong to your Google or Apple account. Install it from the same account on the new phone and you won’t pay again. Your settings and saved places return through your phone’s own backup when you restore it on the new phone.

On Linux (Omarchy)

How do I install it?
Run the command on the Always Weather page in a terminal: it installs the app with pacman, which adds Java 21 if it isn’t there. Then open Always Weather from Omarchy’s launcher. For a new version, run the page’s command again. It’s free on Linux.

Where does it get my location?
Linux gives apps no location of its own. “Use my location” takes the place set in Omarchy’s weather or, if there isn’t one, a rough place from your internet connection, usually your town. With a place set in Omarchy, choose between the two in Settings → Places → Your location.

It shows the wrong town.
The place from your internet connection is a guess, and it can be out, especially behind a VPN. Set your place in Omarchy’s weather, for example with omarchy-weather-location --set Hammersmith in a terminal, or search for a place in the app and save it.

How do I put it in Omarchy’s bar?
Add this to the list in bar.layout in ~/.config/omarchy/shell.json:

The bar then shows the hour’s temperature and weather for the place the app opens with, and a click opens the app. It stays empty until you’ve chosen a place in the app.

Does it have alerts?
Not yet on Linux. Everything else works as on the other platforms.

How do I remove it?

sudo pacman -R always-weather-bin

Your saved places and settings stay in ~/.local/share/always-weather; delete that folder to remove them too.
